PASADENA (AFP) – Martinique and Panama registered upsets against a pair of North American opponents on the opening day of the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament at the Pasadena Rose Bowl.

Gabriel Torres on Sunday scored two goals as Panama stunned two time defending Gold Cup champion Mexico 2-1 in their group A match.

In the other group A contest, Fabrice Reuperne scored in the 92nd minute to lift Martinique to a 1-0 win over Canada.

The 24-year-old Torres scored in the seventh minute off a penalty kick, and again early in the second half (48th) when he outraced Mexico defender Joel Huiqui to the ball and tipped it past goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco.

Marco Fabian tied the game 1-1 late in the first half as he blasted it home after taking a pass from Israel Jimenez.

Panama and Martinique are now tied for first in their group with three points each.

The tournament continues Tuesday with El Salvador facing Trinidad & Tobago, and Haiti squaring off against Honduras.

Group A action resumes on Thursday with a clash between Panama and Martinique, followed by Mexico against Canada.
